Bring It On!

 Last Moon of 2009...Adios

Today--just because we can't afford to lose any more ornaments--I'm taking down the tree.  I realize it's not AFTER the New Year had begun but it's close enough. I'm packing Christmas away until next December.  This should be fun. The cats will be taking turns in either "helping" me pack or being depressed because I'm taking away their "new toys."

I didn't make it past 10PM last night. I received "The Pioneer Woman Cooks" cookbook for Christmas and decided to try out her recipe for chicken fried steak. It's one of those things I never could cook when I was younger. Like beans. When I was younger, I couldn't cook beans to save my life. You know--the pinto beans or navy beans (which are really white--not blue) or red beans (which actually are reddish in color) or black beans. I tried so many different ways--crockpot, pressure cooker, cooking for 3 days and they would come out hard as rocks. I tried soaking them with and without salt, soaking for 3 days, not soaking them and still no avail. The beans were hard enough to crack teeth. I gave up and went to canned beans.

It wasn't until this past year or so that I've learned how to cook beans. And they are good. And they don't break teeth.

Anyway--last night the chicken fry turned out beautifully--even if it didn't make my husband propose to me over and over again like the Marlboro Man does to the Pioneer Woman. I also made her gravy to top mashed 'taters for D and brown rice for me. (That allergy thing again doesn't let me eat potatoes.) I haven't had that meal in ages (try 25-30 years) and it made me sleepy. The Pioneer Woman dubs it "comfort food" and now I understand why--it comforted me right to bed.

I'm telling you it was better than a tranquilizer or a sleeping aid. I didn't wake up until bladder call at 6 this morning!

So I missed the Blue Moon. I missed kissing the old year adios. I missed ringing in the new year.

To those of you who read and comment on my blog--Thank you. It wouldn't work without your participation and I'm grateful that you take time out to read and to leave a comment. I wish you all a happy, prosperous New Year that's filled with good health, cheer, and peace.

To the rest of the world, I wish every one peace and prosperity. There's an economic crisis that affects every person in our world. Our heads of states must understand that we need peace so we all can prosper. Wikipedia states: "Prosperity is the state of flourishing, thriving, success, or good forture. Prosperity often encompasses wealth but also includes others factors which are independent of wealth to varying degrees, such as happiness and health."

Every one deserves peace and prosperity. I hope it comes in this new year, the start of a new decade.

First sunrise of 2010...
Hello New Year--Hello New Decade!

  1. Nicely said Cathryn. I have never tried to cook beans. I buy the unsalted organic in the can and rinse them anyway. They are great and work for everything from enchiladas to salads. I am a vegetarian so beans are a big part of my diet.

I am happy to say that I managed to stay awake until well after midnight. I got tired at 9:30 and came to life while watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve.

At midnight, one text, at 12:08 the second text and at 1:06 the third. Not sure why Matt didn't text to say Happy New Year at my midnight...he waited for his. But it was nice to hear from all three kids.

Then I couldn't fall asleep. Must have been the hot chocolate I had very late in the day and the S'more I decided I had to have for dessert!

Happy New Year to you, your family and your furry family as well!

  2. Wow, chicken fried steak and beans is my kind of meal. I admire you for learning how to cook beans; I can't do it either after years of trying! And thanks for the picture of the moon; rain and fog kept me from seeing it til early New Year's morning. I hope you have the best year ever and that the kindness you bestow upon others comes back to you tenfold.

  3. I barely made it to midnight. I got into bed at 9:00 or so, but just dozed and the girls got me up at 11:30. I went right to bed after we toasted and tooted horns.

    Happy new year!
